Kennedy Orthopaedic Surgeon Enrico Marcelli Offers New Hip Resurfacing Technology

New Technology is an Alternative to Total Hip Replacement for Younger Patients

Voorhees, NJ – Dr. Enrico Marcelli, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon in practice with Academy Orthopedics in Voorhees and Washington Township, NJ, became the first physician on staff with Kennedy Memorial Hospitals to perform a Cormet Hip Resurfacing procedure, an alternative to more aggressive total hip replacement.

With more than 43 million Americans suffering from arthritis, total hip replacement surgery is not uncommon. But the Cormet Hip Resurfacing System – offered exclusively by Stryker in the U.S. – allows patients to resume many of the activities they enjoyed pre-operatively, while conserving more of their natural bone and helping minimize their risk of dislocation ¹.

The Cormet Hip Resurfacing System, which Dr. Marcelli performed at Kennedy – Stratford on March 10, 2009 on a 43-year-old Gloucester County man – provides patients with two important benefits. First, patients have more of their natural bone preserved. In this innovative process, the end of the thigh bone, or femur, is capped with a strong metal covering – much like the capping of a tooth. Because the femoral head is simply reshaped and “resurfaced” rather than removed, the procedure is bone-conserving. Secondly, the large diameter femoral head may reduce the risk of dislocation, and often provides a more natural performance than traditional total hip arthroplasty ¹.

Should the implant need replacing at some time in the future, a conventional total hip replacement can typically be used, making hip resurfacing an attractive option for younger and more active osteoarthritis patients.

“Hip resurfacing offers the right patient a more conservative procedure than traditional hip replacement.” Dr. Marcelli said. “The anatomic nature of these devices enables certain younger, more active patients to get back to the activities that are important to them.”
